All About Me

I was born on October 1, 1962, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. I started writing poetry when I was seven, modeling after my mom who also wrote poetry. I later went on to write short stories and then novels.

Spring

It’s spring,
It’s spring,
Birds sing,
And sing,
It rains,
And rains,
And washes the windowpanes.
The robins, the wrens,
And Grandfather’s hens,
Sing happy-go-lucky
All day.
Bev, age 7

Parents who read and write for fun are powerful models for kids!

I had lots of good teachers who read books to us and helped us learn the writing process.

Teachers are also important models and coaches in literacy development!

Finding an audience is one of the most useful things a writer can do. Trade your work with a friend. Start a writing club. Join a group where members share and critique each other’s work. If you’re writing for young children, make sure you’re trying out your drafts with kids—see what catches their attention.

I live on an acreage with my husband and three sons. We have had a number of pets including: rabbits (a one-time total of 27!), salamanders, cats, lambs, fish, temporary insect pets, Buddy the Dog, and a tarantula spider named Herbie (after Herbie Hancock, jazz musician).

I have taught elementary school in rural and urban settings, worked as a co-ordinator of gifted programs, and been a reading specialist and special education teacher as well as a special education consultant. I am currently doing doctoral studies in Elementary Education: Language and Literacy at the University of Alberta.

My hobbies include writing. Writing. And oh yes! Writing. I also enjoy baking bread, nature study (especially bugs and insects), and travel. I have been lucky enough to visit the following places: England, Scotland, Australia, Spain, Greece, Switzerland, France, Norway, Hawaii, and other parts of the United States.
